Update on the Vintage Vogue Post

So.

I look hideous because it's 1 am and I've been attempting to get this stupid dress to obey what I want it to do.  It came out... and that's about it.

I'll wear a slip with it and a belt - which might help- along with a shrug which I planned to do anyway.    Overall V2902 is ridiculous.  I read other dress diaries on this pattern and it seems that no one is completely happy with the pattern.  The bodice has a side zipper which adds to the problems - if it had a back zipper, then the shoulder straps would be a lot easier to deal with. Instead, the pattern calls you to do a LOT of hand sewing for a vintage pattern.  You have to hand sew the straps, the insides of the contrast, and the waistline if you want it to look completely tailored.

Size wise, it's actually a decent fit.   I went with a 14 and it's a bit loose - which is okay.   I'd much rather have loose than tight!

I do love the skirt.  The skirt is a full circle skirt and comes to about tea length on me.  I might end up yanking the bodice, throwing it away, and keeping the skirt as a circle skirt because it truly is fabulous.  It spins!!!!

EDIT: The picture where I look normal and you can see the dress is a lovely soft pink with teal leaves around the roses? That was me after Mass. :-) I wore it to Church and the grocery store.

Day 5 and I do not like Vintage Vogue Pattern V2902

DSC03554

Today, I got a bit more of the outline done. I would have done more but I was working on a dress for Church tomorrow that will just not work with me at all. (BTW, the paws you see are Jasper's. He refused to move so I could take a picture. Dumb cat...)

The pattern is supposed to be a 1952 original....I don't think it ever worked. The biggest problem is the bodice and the contrasting band. The band has "points" on it whereas the bodice has lovely squared off pieces. These will not match. No matter how much I try to gather or play with it, it will not match. I am not please. I look at it again after Mass but I am not wearing the dress tomorrow which makes me mad. I wanted a nice pink summer dress to wear! Gah! I'll also check da webs to see if who else has attempted this monster.

Day 4 of the Embroidery Project

DSC03547

Today, I did a couple of the roses/flowers/whatever you want to call them.  Those take FOREVER.  They may be small but each one takes roughly 45 minutes.  I like following the border pattern much better but the roses need to get done too.

Historical Fortnightly #15 White!

The Challenge: White
Fabric: Cotton Jacquard for the dress and sleeves. Cotton broadcloth and cotton duck for the lining.
Pattern: The one I edited from McCalls 2798
Year:  1580's vaguely
Notions: Thread and a shoelace to lace it up the back.
How historically accurate is it? It's actually fairly accurate for the late 16th/early 17th C. I was rather surprised when I put it together how cool it looked on.
Hours to complete: roughly 5 or 6
First worn: Probably to the Renn Fest day of wrong but maybe before that.
Total cost: $50 for the fabric.

Research:

I admit, this is what I was going for. Doctor Who actually can be quite historical (Girl in the Fireplace. This one is from Vampires in Venice) and sometimes it can completely miss the mark. This one looked awesome and I thought it looked historical enough to wear to SCA events.

Some of my inspiration from period sources:

Day 3

DSC03543

Today, I finished another "flower" and filled in some of the outlined edges. I'm roughly 40% done. I'm hoping to use this high necked chemise for the Separates challenge of the Historical Fortnightly. Here's hoping I can sew this up!

Embroidery Project Day 2

DSC03542

I cannot sew in a straight line. Thank goodness this will be around my neck and no one will know that it was supposed to be in a straight line. ;-)

Probably should put up last week's Historical Fortnightly post but...

My current embroidery project. This is what I've done thus far today. The design is based off of one from a portrait done in the 1520's. :-)
